SEL in Inclusive Schools: Positive Youth Development for All Students

Want to know what it's like to learn social and emotional (SEL) skills through inclusion? Take a look at this interactive demonstration session with Washington metropolitan area students, who will talk about their experiences and personal growth in an inclusive extracurricular program, Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools. Learn about an inclusive game for students that will get you thinking about the importance of social inclusion for your school. Supported by findings from a national evaluation, the student perspective will help you view SEL through the lens of social inclusion and will enhance your understanding of how schools can support positive youth development for all students.

Participants will be able to: 1) Understand how extracurricular activities support students developing SEL skills, and the added value of inclusive extracurricular activities, especially for students with disabilities. 2) Learn about an evidence-based strategy to implement inclusive extracurricular activities in their elementary, middle, or high school. 3) Reflect on your own school's level of social inclusion and develop concrete youth-driven strategies to enhance it.
